Unpaid Intern Sues Harper’s Bazaar for Minimum Wage

Xuedan Wang, 28, was an intern at the magazine’s accessories department from August to December last year, where she typically worked at least 40 hours a week, and sometimes as much as 55 hours, without pay, according to her lawsuit filed on Wednesday.

According to information for prospective interns published on the Hearst careers website, the company does not pay its interns but instead offers them academic credit, a practice that is widespread among publishing companies and in other competitive industries.

“The goals of Hearst Magazines internships are to provide opportunities for students to gain valuable experience and exposure to the world of publishing,” the company says on its careers website.”
